Matthieu Dhenne
Matthieu DHENNE is a lawyer registered at the Paris Bar since 2014. He founded Dhenne Avocats in 2018. Matthieu focuses on intellectual property, patent law and trade secrets.
Thus, he advises and represents his clients, primarily for issues related to patent law. For example, in the fields of computer science, FRAND (Fair, Reasonable, and Non-Discriminatory) licensing, chemistry, life sciences, electronic devices, medical devices, and mechanical inventions, as well as employee inventions.
Education
Matthieu holds a PhD in patent law (Université Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas), a Master II in industrial property law (CEIPI, Strasbourg) and an LL.M. in International Legal Practice from Bond University (Queensland, Australia). During his academic career Matthieu was a visiting researcher at Columbia University (New York) and a fellow at the Max-Planck Institute for Competition Law and Intellectual Property Law in Munich (Max-Planck and GRUR fellowships).
Distinctions
Matthieu's expertise has been recognized by several international rankings. He was ranked tier 1 – Rising Star in 2018 and 2019 for patent litigation by Legal 500, and by Leader’s League as Excellent in patent litigation, particularly in the Excellent category for patent litigation in the life sciences sector. He has also earned recognition from his peers, notably being appointed as Rapporteur of the French Group of AIPPI (International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property) in 2017 to study issues related to computer-implemented inventions.
His expertise explains why he is regularly consulted by public authorities (such as for the law on the protection of trade secrets), by French media (e.g., here, here, and here), and why he served as a senior research affiliate at the Max-Planck Institute for Competition and Intellectual Property in Munich in 2019 and at the Institute of Intellectual Property in Tokyo in 2020. He was also appointed as an expert observer within the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) at the OECD in 2020.
TEACHING
Matthieu is a lecturer at the University of Paris Panthéon-Assas, where he also teaches intellectual property litigation and intellectual property law as applied to the digital sector in the master's degree in industrial property law.
He has also taught intellectual property law at École Centrale Supelec, Sorbonne University, Paris XII University, Lille University and Montpellier University.
PUBLICATIONS
Matthieu is the author or co-author of several works in patent law, including a Treatise on Patent Law published by LexisNexis in 2024. He has also contributed to works specifically addressing patent law in the fields of computer science and biotechnology published between 2016 and 2019: "Technique et droit des brevets," "Computer-Implemented Inventions: Issues, Practices, and Perspectives," and "The Law of Reverse Engineering." These publications reflect his deep expertise and contributions to the field of patent law.
He is also the author of over a hundred articles primarily related to patent law, the majority of which have been published in peer-reviewed journals (such as Dalloz, LexisNexis, Lamy). Additionally, he has authored LexisNexis encyclopedia entries on FRAND licenses and technical aspects. Furthermore, he serves as the French contributor to the Kluwer Patent Blog International, where he regularly publishes articles.
